You know it’s Gem Show season when you see more tents in the Old Pueblo than you see in the Sahara Desert. Treasure seekers come from all over the world looking for something unique.
The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show began in 1946, bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors and vendors to Tucson to trade an unimaginable array of treasures from around the world. Wander down any aisle of this international bazaar and you’ll take a trip back in time and through a multitude of cultures — dinosaur bones displayed beside Tibetan bells, and across the tent cascades of beads next to million-year-old fossils and sparkling gems from deep in the earth. In this sprawling, city-wide marketplace it feels like you can find just about any rare object you can imagine. Such thoughts inspired TALES OF TUCSON Episode 7: The Genie at the Gem Show. It’s the story of one very rare, very dangerous geode that just about everyone wanted to get their hands on….
