Underwriting

SUPPORT

An important contribution to quality radio is made by foundations, corporations, and individuals who provide funds to underwrite the presentation of programming broadcast on KXCI.

Underwriting is a great way to support KXCI and guarantee on-air placement of your message to KXCI’s community-minded audience. Announcements are 25-second on-air mentions, up to 65 words, and are read live by our on-air DJs to inform listeners about your business or organization. These on-air mentions blend with our programming instead of interrupting it, and there are never any production costs. Underwriting may include the name, location, and nature of your business; the products and services you offer; information regarding special events; and your contact information, including phone number and website. Our underwriting team will work with you to ensure your on-air mention falls within our non-profit guidelines and ensures that effective and engaging information gets out to the Tucson Community.

Underwriting singles you out
Underwriting on KXCI places you, your product, or your service in a unique position by clearly separating your name from the clutter inherent in commercial advertising. Just as you, the underwriter, supports KXCI, KXCI’s loyal listeners will support you.

You can reach a specific target audience
KXCI offers you the chance to select the times that will most economically reach your segment of the market with the greatest potential.

Underwriting identifies your company as socially aware
An association with KXCI, with its long-standing reputation for social responsibility, identifies your company as a civic and community-minded organization with an interest in the public that goes beyond simply selling a product or service.

KXCI FCC Underwriting Copy Guidelines

As a non-profit and non-commercial radio station, KXCI is required to follow FCC
guidelines for underwriting announcements. The FCC has identified five practices that promote
rather than identify and therefore are not permissible for broadcast on non-commercial
stations: comparative descriptions, qualitative descriptions, pricing information, calls to action
and inducements to buy, sell, rent or lease.

Here are examples of each:

1. Comparative Descriptions
Announcements that contain descriptive language comparing the underwriter’s products with
those of competitors are not permitted. Comparative descriptions usually include words that
draw an explicit or implicit comparison to others, such as best, better, more, and superior

Examples of acknowledgements that include these comparative terms are:
“With more assets than any other bank”
“Featuring the best products in town”

The relevant test is not whether these statements are true. A statement can be truthful and
still be comparative and therefore promotional.

2. Qualitative Language
Announcements that contain qualitative descriptions of the underwriter’s products are not
permitted. Qualitative descriptions include words that describe the features, benefits,
advantages or other qualities offered by the underwriter’s products or services. Examples of
qualitative words are fine, excellent, tasty and good.

Examples:
“Builder of homes of distinction”
“With twenty convenient locations”

3. Pricing Information
Announcements containing pricing information are not permitted. This includes interest rate
information or other indications of savings or value associated with the product.

Examples:
“7.7% interest rate now available”
“Making computer power affordable at every desk”
“Office products at discount prices”

4. Calls to Action
Announcements that contain a “call to action” are not permitted. Most calls to action contain
imperative language. That is a statement to the listener that tells him or her to take action.

Examples:
“Call us at 555-2222 for more information”
41
“Try Texaco next time you buy gasoline”
“Enjoy a night out at John’s Restaurant”

5. Inducements to Buy, Sell, Rent, or Lease
Announcements containing any inducement to buy, sell, rent or lease are not permissible.
Language or descriptions that give reasons for doing business with the underwriter should be
suspected of serving promotional rather than identification purposes.

Examples:
“Six months free service”
“A bonus available this week only”
“With twenty stores nearby to save you time and money”

Additional Underwriting Policies:

6. The station does not accept corporate sponsorships which promote the use of illicit drugs,
alcohol, tobacco, or firearm
7. The station does not accept political advertising
8. The station will produce all announcements with station voices

Billing Information & The Billing Process

[The Billing Cycle]

At KXCI, we bill for underwriting the month after the reads. What this means is that if your underwriting announcement runs during the month of May, you will receive an invoice for that underwriting in the month of June.

We understand that some of our underwriters prefer to pay their invoices in full, and we’re happy to accommodate that. If you would like to pay in full, we can provide you with an estimated total based on your expected reads for the duration of your underwriting contract. This option can be helpful for those who want to plan their budget and payments in advance.

[Clarification on Reads]

To clarify, reads refer to the number of times your underwriting announcement is read on air during the month. So, if your announcement is read 20 times during the month of May, you will be billed for those 20 reads in the month of June.

[Payment Options]

Once you receive your invoice, we offer two convenient payment options for you to choose from. The first option is e-billing through Marketron, our secure online payment portal. With e-billing, you can easily access and pay your invoices from anywhere at any time. It’s quick, convenient, and eco-friendly.

Alternatively, we also offer traditional mail delivery. If you prefer to receive a hard copy of your invoice in the mail, simply let us know and we’ll send it to the address on file. Please note that if you choose to receive a paper invoice, there may be a delay in receiving and processing your payment.

If you choose to pay in full, we can arrange for a one-time payment by your preferred method.

We are thrilled to present both our new AND continuing supporters to the Underwriters’ Corner! KXCI is so grateful for their commitment to community radio, and we are honored to read their messages on the airwaves. Thank you Underwriters!
