Houda recently had an opportunity to sit down and talk with Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild. In the first of our two Mn Huna: Finding Refuge in Friendship episodes featuring Mayor Rothschild, Houda interviews the Mayor about the current political climate regarding refugees. (Stay tuned for the second episode, where the Mayor interviews Houda!)
Mayor Rothschild: “The strength of our country is based on the fact that we are a country of refugees…Refugees are people who have come here because they have been oppressed elsewhere and see the traditional values of this country as a place they want to be. And those are the kind of people that we want to have in our country. Refugees are people who are brought here legally and have been vetted by our government. Our country has been unique and strong because we have accepted people from all over the world.”
On meeting people from other cultures: “The value of people meeting each other is to get that understanding that we are all very similar with the same goals, the same aspirations, the same desire to raise families and live good lives. The more people mix, the more they understand that.”
