Hi! I’m Dez Coleman and I am a senior studying biochemistry at the University of Arizona. After graduation, I hope to attend medical school with the ultimate goal of becoming a physician scientist. While practicing medicine, I plan to conduct translational clinical research to improve patient care. My clinical research experience began when I joined Dr. Todd Vanderah’s lab through the Undergraduate Biology Research Program. In the lab, my project focuses on understanding the molecular mechanism of HIV/AIDS related pain. This is primarily done by measuring nerve pain caused by HIV/AIDS, then analyzing the proteins found in tissue samples. The end goal of my project is to develop a non-addictive medication to replace opioids and improve the quality of life for those who suffer from HIV/AIDS. Outside of the lab, I enjoy exploring local small businesses and creating different forms of art.
