In this episode, we hear from Michael Martinez, the Executive Director of Live Theatre Workshop. We talk about the life-changing work that Live Theatre Workshop is doing in our community and in our schools with kids and adults, but first, and Michael tells us about his voyage as a wayward, queer, Jewish, Latinx teen who came home to theater. Michael also talks about Live Theatre Workshop as a tool to address social justice issues, especially given the lack of arts learning in many Arizona schools. We also discuss efforts to expand what theater audiences in Tucson look like, and the value of diversifying representation on stage as well. (He tells a story about the star of The Lion King that will warm your heart!) We also talk about making a living “gigging” in the Tucson theater scene. Live Theatre Workshop has been around since 1994 and has been in the black for the past 15 years. Michael tells us how!
