Why we do it:
Music is bonding and has been since the beginning of time itself. It brings individuals together who might otherwise have led solitary lives and has a healing effect that defies all known medicines. It is a place marker for fond memories and moments in our lives that have a soundtrack that only our souls can hear. It is a food that nourishes all. Those who carry on the traditions and arts are the greatest bank of all, they are the Treasurers of Societal Well Being.
A little-known Arizona historical fact: The now National non-profit Feeding America Started in Phoenix Arizona at a church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which hosted a food bank that supplied the needs of many. Here is the history of Feeding America. The idea originated in the late 1960s when John Van Hengel, a retired businessperson, established the first food bank in Phoenix, Arizona. The idea for food banking came from a mother who suggested that food could be stored for people to pick up instead of being thrown away. Subsequently, John Van Hengel started St. Mary’s Food Bank after volunteering at a local soup kitchen and collecting more food than the kitchen could use. In 1979, John Van Hengel created Second Harvest to help local food bank initiatives and help families in need statewide. Obviously, the needs grew as did the creation of food banks all over the world. In 2008, Second Harvest merged with Foodchain and changed its name to Feeding America That outreach has expanded across the nation, and it still feeds the needs of millions. Feeding America’s mission is to create an America where no one is hungry
Combined we meet the needs of those hungry in a nutritional and emotional way that makes me proud to do what I do.
