When rising blues star Carl “Buffalo” Nichols came through Tucson on June 10, 2023, we knew we had to pair him with Dr. Tyina Steptoe, host of Soul Stories on KXCI (Saturdays 2-5 PM) for a live session and interview. The result? Two gorgeous, heartfelt songs performed acoustically by Nichols and augmented with a rich, thoughtful conversation between himself and Professor Steptoe, who came to the mic armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of blues history and a natural curiosity to explore what it means to be a young Black artist working within the genre today.
