Hi, I’m Waldo Guzman Barrientos! I am a senior at the University of Arizona majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Computer Science. My research in the Padi Lab focuses on unraveling the mechanisms behind Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare and aggressive type of cancer for which current forms of treatment are not very effective. I combine computational and wet lab experiments in hope of finding the drivers of this cancer and developing targeted therapies. Specifically, I work on simulating the gene network of tumor cells and introducing a cancer-causing virus into cells, measuring their protein levels with microscopy. I have fallen in love with research, and after completing my Master’s degree next year, I plan to apply to PhD programs. Outside of the lab, I enjoy playing video games, hiking, traveling, and visiting museums.
