The Indigenous Market began in September 2023 to give space for a diverse range of Indigenous artists and business owners to showcase their creations. With the support of organizations like Historic Fourth Ave Coalition and Made in Tucson, the Indigenous Market has been held four times in less than a year as a free event.
The vendors sell traditional and contemporary handmade crafts, artwork, jewelry, food, clothing, music, and more. The Indigenous Market has continued to grow and started from Josie Rios who had an idea of how to spotlight Indigenous artists who faced barriers.
Josie Rios is a member of the Akimel O’odham / Gila River Indian Community, and the beading artist of Beads over Diamonds. A Tucson-based maker, she is influenced by the many colors of the city’s desert surroundings, its famous sunsets, and the memories of growing up in Tucson.
To keep up with the Indigenous Market and its upcoming events, you can check out its instagram page. There will be an upcoming art show on Oct. 12 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to promote awareness about Missing Murdered Indigenous People and raise funds for Indivisible Tohono. The art show will be held at 311 E 7th St.
Celeste Mills is the artist behind Cactus Bloom Design, and Roselena Trevizo is the owner of 1989 Bakehouse.
