La Peña del SurCo is an all-ages, participatory Latin American folk music gathering celebrating community, song, and shared musical traditions. Peñas are informal, welcoming events where multiple groups perform, audience members are invited to sing along, and community connection is central to the experience.
Led by University of Arizona ethnomusicologist and violinist Dr. Jennie Gubner, La Peña del SurCo features her Argentine/Chilean folk trio El SurCo, whose music draws from traditions of Argentina, Chile, and surrounding regions. Their sound blends guitars, violin, charango, bombo, and vocal harmonies, bringing chacareras, cuecas, chamamés, and other folk styles to life.
This month’s peña highlights musicians from throughout the year’s peña series, offering a rich and diverse evening of music-making. Argentine empanadas and drinks will be available for purchase from Che Café Empanadas, and guests are also welcome to bring their own refreshments.
