Hi, my name is Karen Serrano and I’m a junior studying Biology and Plant Science at the University of Arizona. I’ve been working in Dr. Raina Maier’s Environmental Microbiology lab for a little under a year now. Our research focuses on streamlining the reclamation process for various mines. This involves evaluating the biogeochemistry of the soil and analyzing plant species composition on the affected areas within mines. Outside of the lab, I’m involved in University of Arizona Sky School and the Women in Medicine and Science club. After my undergrad, I hope to pursue a graduate program in Genetics with a focus on plant breeding.
