Hi, my name is Gamaliel Luna but I go by Isai. I am a senior majoring in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science and minoring in Biochemistry at the University of Arizona. In the Martha Bhattacharya Lab, I am investigating the mechanisms of mitochondrial transfer between neurons and glial cells following nerve injury. Previous studies suggest that glia can transfer their own mitochondria to neurons inflicted with injury, which can lead to better recovery. I aim to take images of this transfer using a confocal microscope, which can capture “snapshots” of the nerve tissue in fly larvae after inducing injuries like severing nerves. Understanding mitochondrial transfer can lead to future therapeutic interventions to maintain neuronal health in the midst of stress and injury. My lab experience has inspired me to continue my research path by pursuing a PhD in neuroscience post-graduation. When I am not in the lab, I love to watch films/TV, read, learn a new language (currently learning Greek), and play with my dog, Zuko.

Mitochondria,
Neurons and glia need you,
You’ve got the power!
