
Dr. Gallitano is a Professor in the Departments of Basic Medical Sciences, Psychiatry, and Translational Neuroscience at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix (UACOM – Phx). She is a board certified psychiatrist and neuroscientist studying how genes that are activated in the brain in response to environmental events, such as stress, may influence the development of psychiatric illnesses. Since starting her laboratory, Dr. Gallitano has received local, foundation, and federal grants and awards, including from the National Institute of Health (NIH). Dr. Gallitano co-leads a team that was recently awarded an inaugural Big Idea Challenge Award from the University of Arizona to establish a Heat and Health Resilience Innovation Consortium focused on developing approaches to reduce illness and death resulting from extreme heat. Dr. Gallitano is committed to supporting the advancement of women and individuals from groups that are under-represented in the sciences and to mentoring trainees from all backgrounds who have a passion for neuroscience, medicine, and solutions to sustain health in a changing world.
