The Tucson Flute Club will present a Fall Festival of seasonal flute music on Sunday, October 25, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (in the Sanctuary). The concert will feature the Southern Arizona Flute Orchestra performing seasonal music under the baton of Jack Schmidgall, Music Director. The varied program will include traditional selections such as “Londonderry Air,” “You Made Me Love You,” and “Ashokan Farewell,” as well as challenging works by Kelly Via and Philip Glass. And of course “The Mysterious Mansion” in honor of Scary Season. The public is warmly invited. Admission is free, with donations appreciated.
The instrumentation for the concert will include five sizes of flutes – piccolo, C flute, alto flute, bass flute, and contrabass flute – encompassing six octaves and producing a surprising, richly textured sound.
St. Mark’s is located at 1431 W. Magee Road (at La Cañada, southwest corner). There are entrances from both Magee and La Cañada with ample parking surrounding the church. The north parking lot is closest to the Sanctuary and includes accessible parking.
Tucson Flute Club was founded in 1970 by the late Philip Swanson, then professor of flute at UA. The membership includes both amateur and professional flutists, as well as those interested in the flute, including five of the original founding members. The objectives of this 501(c)3 organization are to enable flutists to meet for ensemble playing for their own enjoyment; to broaden the knowledge of flute literature by providing performing opportunities for members and guest artists; and to increase knowledge of the flute through lectures, discussions, and related activities.
