International Flute Icon Robert Dick and Rising Innovator Caleb Hathaway Lead “Future of the Flute Weekend” April 26–27.
What happens when a musical revolutionary meets a fearless young creator? Audiences and participants will find out at The Future of the Flute Weekend, an immersive, two-day workshop happening at the CATALYST Creative Collective in Tucson, Arizona
Billed as “boundary-pushing music-making,” this event goes beyond notes on a page — it’s about unlocking new sounds, new ideas, and new possibilities for the flute.
But at its heart, it’s also a story about mentorship, transformation, and how musical innovation travels from one generation to the next.
Now, years after studying with Dick, Hathaway returns not just as a student, but as a collaborator, co-leading workshops in extended techniques, improvisation, and interdisciplinary sound creation. The two artists embody very different artistic voices — Dick, the inventor and virtuoso whose innovations like the Glissando Headjoint™ have reshaped the instrument, and Hathaway, the sound designer using technology, loops, and layered effects to build immersive sonic worlds.
A Weekend for Everyone — Not Just Flutists
Open to performers, composers, students, educators, and sound explorers of all levels, Future of the Flute Weekend includes:
Interactive workshops on improvisation, sound exploration, and extended techniques
An introduction to the revolutionary Glissando Headjoint™
Interdisciplinary collaboration and creative experimentation
“Capture Your Sound” — a hands-on session on mics, acoustics, and recording techniques
Performances, Q&As, and mentorship from two generations of innovators
Participants will leave not only with new skills, but with new ideas about what it means to be a musician in the 21st century.
