You probably loved Felix and Oscar when you first met them in 1965. Then, you may have seen a new production twenty years later, in 1985, when Neil Simon polished his own classic, by rewriting The Odd Couple with a female leading duo. The DNA of the original may be recognizable, a story of two absolute opposites who move in together after their marriages crumble, but the female version has even greater energy, updated dialogue, and a wonderful new twist and zip! And then again, you may have missed, or you can’t remember, whether you saw either of the above shows when they first came out! But don’t miss this upcoming opportunity, to see Florence, not Felix; and Olive, not Oscar; as the unlikely pair of lovable neurotics attempt to live in the same apartment. The easy-going Olive is comfortable living in perpetual disarray, but when Florence moves in, and tries to sanitize Olive’s life, the “honeymoon” is over! There is also a wonderful supporting cast of “likely suspects”, who get together each week to play Trivial Pursuit, (not poker), Mickey, Sylvie, Vera, and Renee. Each character is a real “character “, and therein lies their charm! Florence’s “mothering” instinct and Olive’s laissez faire approach to life, create just the right amount of friction to be hysterical, while proving that there really is such a thing as a “roommate from hell”! Perhaps the funniest scene in all of Neil Simon’s vast vault of comedy, may be the scene with Florence, Olive, and the Costazuela Brothers, the Spaniards from upstairs, who Olive invites for dinner. Between the Costazuela’s interpretations of English, the women’s translations of Spanish, and the “burnt bird”, which was once a moist capon, you will laugh yourselves silly! You will have to see it, to believe it!
