This healing commemoration at Mission Manor Park will include an unveiling of a permanent memorial to those lost to and impacted by TCE created by Alex! Jimenez. Filmmaker Franc Contreras, Robin Young, and a group of Sunnyside High School alumni will lead the planning.
Local Environmental Justice activists and dignitaries, including Congresswoman-elect Adelita Grijalva, Representative Betty Villegas, Supervisor Andrés Cano, Ward 1 Council Member Lane Santa Cruz, Journalist Jane Kay, and author Dr. Sunaura Taylor (Disabled Ecologies: Lessons From a Wounded Desert, 2024) will share historic details and words of inspiration about how our community’s resilience helped many confront this little-known environmental tragedy that unfolded throughout decades on the south side.
Affected families will carry enlarged photographs of loved ones impacted or lost to water contamination during this spirited and deeply moving commemoration, which will include Mariachi music, delicious local foods, and a special Tohono O’odham healing blessing. The event will also feature the unveiling of a permanent memorial monument created by local artist Alex! Jimenez. You can submit photos of loved ones impacted by TCE at LosDesTucson.com/tce
