In honor of Juneteenth, The Drawing Studio is set to unveil a powerful and historic art expo featuring 100 local Pan-African artists, the first of its kind in Arizona and the only official event in Tucson on Juneteenth.
Staged in our second building and curated by acclaimed artist and educator Randiesia Fletcher, M.Ed of Living2Portraits Art Studio, the exhibit features more than 100 original pieces of painting, sculpture, and mixed media from 100 artists across Arizona.
This event is part of the official Tucson Juneteenth slate — and it is the only public event in Tucson taking place on the actual Juneteenth holiday, Thursday, June 19.
The expo runs from 2 PM until 8 PM and is sponsored by the Tucson Black Women’s Task Force and Tucson Juneteenth Festival, among other generous supporters.
All ages are welcome.
“You do not want to miss this presentation,” suggests Maggie Rush Miller, Executive Director of The Drawing Studio. “The exhibit is more than a gallery show. It is a multi-sensory experience, including sight, sound, and scent. Imagine the echoes of the Middle Passage and all that journey evokes.”
Visitors will experience:
A multimedia theatre with rare archival footage, home videos, speeches, and documentaries
Live storytelling, poetry, and performances throughout the day
Afrocentric cuisine, music, drumming, and dance
A Black-owned entrepreneur market
Family craft tables, including masks, fans, and Maasai collars
A VIP “Meet the Artist” evening on June 18 (sponsor benefit; by invitation only)
