Friends of Aphasia, a nonprofit in Tucson that helps people with aphasia work toward rebuilding their ability to communicate. We are hosting an open house on Friday, September 12 to give potential clients and organizations that work with people who are affected by some form of aphasia the opportunity to see our facility, learn more about our aphasia groups and our members, learn about volunteering, and discuss potential partnerships.
Aphasia is a language disorder that impairs the ability to communicate (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding). Aphasia is typically caused by damage to the brain areas responsible for language. This damage can result from a stroke, brain tumor, head injury, or other neurological conditions. One important thing to know is that aphasia is a problem with communication NOT with intelligence. Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords is living with aphasia as a result of a gunshot she suffered to the head in 2011. She is our cofounder and remains on our board today. You may also be familiar with Actor Bruce Willis, who has a form of aphasia called primary progressive aphasia.
