St. Michael’s Guatemala Project and visiting Ixil Maya health leaders Diego Lopez and Pedro Bernal celebrate a 32-year relationship that began with the “Primera Visita Por Tierra” in February, 1993, during the waning years of Guatemala’s 36-year internal conflict, when Internationals, among them Ila Abernathy, now Project Coordinator, walked into remote mountains to visit Ixil and K’iche families that had fled settled communities to escape massacres. The Celebration features fiesta foods, greetings in indigenous languages and from the Guatemalan Consulate, a brief Kodachrome 64 “retro” slide show, conversation with Pedro and Diego and Project team participants, and information about 2025 teams. Participation by Tucson’s Guatemalan community, music, and a sale of of Maya textiles and Guatemalan trinkets round out the Celebration
