GM Report October 2012

General Manager Report to the Board of Directors, October 2012

Randy Peterson, General Manager

Finance reports for October 2012 have been provided separately. It was not a good month for revenue, which both membership and underwriting coming under projections and expenses right at 100% for the month. However, that is sometimes just a function of timing and I do not believe there are any inherent problems in our revenue streams, save for the next comment:

We did learn in October that our Corporation for Public Broadcasting grant, which we had budgeted at $88,480 will instead be $81,780, a loss of $6,700. While disappointing, it is not a trend for concern – the CPB bases our FY13 funding on our FY11 revenue. As we grew from FY11 to FY12, our grant for next year will grow as well. I also believe we have several avenues to make up $6,700 in our budget.

Continuing discussions with NPR Digital Services have me convinced that we will be going our own way with the website, which presents both challenges (time, design costs, training time) and affords opportunities (more creativity and flexibility, better branding, lower operational costs, more revenue avenues).

The full staff had a special sales meeting at which we established minimum spots rates, goals for higher average sales (and more sales) and began the process of recreating rate sheets and marketing materials. Underwriting revenue grew significantly from FY11 to FY12 and we’d like to see that trend continue for FY13.

#Giving Tuesday is a national event scheduled for November 27th as a designated day to support non-profits. Here in Tucson, KXCI and the Fox Tucson Theatre are spearheading the day which will include a 4-hour on-air membership drive for KXCI (focused on new and gift memberships) and a “happy hour for the arts” at the Fox featuring a live remote with Cathy Rivers and Al Perry. Confirmed participants include KXCI, the Fox, the Rialto, Arizona Theatre Company, 2nd Saturdays Downtown, TKMA/Tucson Folk Festival, and The Screening Room/Arizona International Film Festival.

We participated in the Spirit of Philanthropy Awards luncheon at Westin La Paloma, where we recognized Calexico for their contributions to KXCI. Along with #Giving Tuesday (and our sponsorship of the Fox gala event Chasing Rainbows), we are continually repositioning the station as a major player in the Tucson non-profit world.

I attended the quarterly CAB meeting in November.

The Programmers Advisory Committee was created and met for the first time in November. We will meet monthly, with a goal of operating as a sounding board for me on policies related to volunteering at the station. PAC members include Matt Milner (Locals Only), Betsi Meissner (Neutral Ground), Susan Banes (Music Mix), Gene Armstrong (The Road Show), Mike Johnson (Trippin’ Eclectics) and Elva de la Torre (super sub). It’s a great mix of experiences.

Capital campaign work is being and we have received our first two pledges – before you get too excited, that would be Amanda and I. Appointments to solicit board donations and cabinet positions are set for the rest of this month.

Some changes have been made to our Sunday public affairs lineup, with a reduction of Broad Perspectives to a half hour and the cancellation of the syndicated This Way Out show, which will be replaced with a locally-produced module for the LGBTQ community with our friends at Wingspan. We now have a public affairs opening from 5 to 6pm on Sunday and are currently investigating a number of different programs, both national and local.

Ernesto’s retirement on Onda Suave created a ripple through our schedule with a handful of late night changes and the creation of a new program, Deep Red Radio, that will air at 2:30am Wednesday morning with a new deejay, “Dewtron” and featuring cinematic sounds both real and imagined.

Unfortunately we will also soon be losing our Stereosphere program (Fridays at 6pm) as Jorg is moving from the area for a new job. The staff has discussed several possibilities for that slot with nothing definitive yet.

Audit field work begins November 15th and should conclude on November 19th.

The KXCI online holiday auction – a major source of revenue this time of the year – opens for bidding on November 26th. Last year we topped $10,000 in winning bids. Your support – bidding, sharing the link to the auction site, talking it up in your circles – is always greatly appreciated.
