GM Report December 2013

SUPPORT

By Randy Peterson, General Manager

KXCI celebrated 30 years on-air (Dec. 6th, 1983) with a 30-day celebration, November 22nd through December 21st. Nearly 30 events were held ranging from our own concerts to KXCI Presents shows to sponsoring the downtown Festival of Lights Parade and holding on-air wedding (four of them!), plus “usual” December events like our holiday auction, Sonic Solstice and potluck, the Fourth Avenue Street Fair and the annual Festivus concert with TKMA.

The anniversary was an exhausting yet exhilarating campaign that generated a tremendous amount of needed media coverage for KXCI. The staff and the volunteers – including many board volunteers – are to be commended for the fantastic effort needed to pull off so many events within the timeframe.

The capital campaign continues to move along at a steady pace and I am optimistic that we will be able to reach the half way point of $375,000 by the end of January or early February. The campaign has also received extensive coverage, both free and with paid placement in papers like the Foothills News and the Marana News. More coverage is in the works, including a piece in Tucson Lifestyle magazine, a great target audience for our campaign.

As an element of the capital campaign, I’ve put together KXCI’s first crowd-funding campaign through Rocket Hub, which will launch around the 1st of January with a goal of raising funds for Studio 2A improvements (including video) and for additional training so we’ll be able to have more live performances in the future without always tying up Duncan’s time.

Field work for the audit begins January 13th. In a reverse from the past several years, Jo Ann and I have spent considerable time assembling documents, scanning and sending them to the auditors prior to their arrival. In the past they typically did the field work in mid-November and then we spent two months afterward fulfilling these requests; in general I feel like this new approach makes more sense.

The staff and I are settling in to the new SCRUM project management system, which has been quite a bit of help in helping us to prioritize work projects and to also really think about how certain things that we do help drive our mission (or don’t drive it). We’re still learning.

January will be the complete opposite of December, with virtually no events on the calendar and presents a chance for everyone to regroup and recharge.

Amanda and I met with members of the Tohono O’odham nation to discuss a new podcast of their Native history and stories that would be shared through our website. It was a productive meeting and I hopeful that the first of those segments will be available early in 2014.

The station was again nominated in December for the Governor’s Arts Award, we’ll find out if we won in the spring.
