The Paladins return to the famed El Casino Ballroom where they first played back in 1985. Over the past thirty plus years the band has risen from the once hungry rockabilly/blues trio that visited Tucson for the first time, to the international touring headliner that is featured in major festivals throughout the US, Europe and Australia. Dave Gonzalez, the guitarist and band leader, was selected by Guitar Magazine as one of the top “101 Unsung Guitar Heroes of All time.” Gonzalez is still performing with bassist Thomas Yearsley with whom he started the band in 1980 while they were in high school. Based out of San Diego, they rose up through the same American Roots music scene that spawned Los Lobos and the Blasters. Since then they have released twelve records including last year’s New World. The latest release shows that the Paladins are equally adept at performing a variety of styles including Blues, Soul, Country and even Surf instrumentals. Even though they don’t quite travel as much as they use to when they earned their reputation as part of the million mile club, their action packed shows have not slowed a bit, as they continue to prove that they are one of the hardest rockin’ trios in the world.
Opening the show will be The Blues Guitar Rumble featuring Ed Delucia, Michael P., Mitzi Cowell, Mike Hebert and Koko Matsumoto. Mike Hebert, who was originally from San Diego, has known the Paladins for 35 years since his days performing there with the Forbidden Pigs. He has assembled this super group of Arizona Blues Hall of Famers to showcase some of the best guitar licks Tucson has to offer. This will be the first time all five have joined each other on stage and it will certainly be a special night to remember. They will kick off the show at 7:30 pm with doors at 6:30. Tickets are $15 in advance at azblues.org and $20 at the door. Food will be available for purchase from the award winning Allyn Haynes BBQ.
