Warlock

SUPPORT

“He’s come from the past to destroy the future.” An evil, ponytailed warlock flees from 17th century Boston to late 20th century Los Angeles with an obsessed witch-hunter in hot pursuit, and only a kooky valley girl stands between them and total B-movie Armageddon in this fun and goofy supernatural horror flick fueled by cheese-encrusted magic.
In Warlock, legit thespian Julian Sands (Naked Lunch) stars as a murderous warlock who escapes the gallows and is magically transported, along with Giles (Richard E. Grant, Withnail and I), the witch-hunter who brought him to trial, 300 years into the future. Running amuck in late-1980s L.A., the creepy leather-clad Warlock, who enjoys slicing off people’s fingers and delivering pompous monologues, crashes into the house of a young waitress named Kassandra (Lori Singer, Footloose), puts a curse on her that ages her 20 years every day, and then sets about reuniting the scattered portions of a Devil’s Book that will reveal the true name of God and thus destroy all of mankind. Naturally, Kassandra and Giles team up to stop the end of the world (and stop Kassandra from entering a retirement home before the weekend), all while the Warlock plots his evil revenge against humanity, which includes drinking the fat from virgin boys (!) in order to gain the power of flight (rendered via some amazingly tacky special effects which make the flying warlock look like a drunken Muppet on a bender). A nutty, horror-tinged Terminator rip-off with awful SFX and surprisingly solid acting, Warlock spawned a sequel and briefly made English Warlocks viable horror movie monsters. And then we got over it. (Dir. by Steve Miner, 1989, USA, 103 mins., Rated R)
