Tucson, Ariz.- The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) presents W. Eugene Smith: A Life in Pictures at the Alice Chaiten Baker Interdisciplinary Gallery. The exhibition opens from September 2nd until March 2nd, 2024. It features 45 photos and archival materials from five series: World War II, Nurse Midwife, Jazz Loft, Hitachi Corporation, and Minamata, encompassing some of his most successful years working for Life magazine. Smith, who died in 1959 in Tucson, Arizona, at age 59, was once described by the late John Berger as “one of the great masters of reportage and of photographic story-telling.” Chief Curator Dr. Rebecca Senf maintains that the prolific photographer set the standard for photo essays, and Smith “made a lasting impact on the field of photojournalism.”
The CCP is pleased to host exciting programming to celebrate Smith’s oeuvre, including a reception on September 12th at 5:30pm at the CCP auditorium and a visiting artist lecture by Takeshi Ishikawa on October 12th at 5:30pm at the CCP auditorium.
