Tucson Flute Club presents A Spring Celebration

SUPPORT

Tucson Flute Club has resumed rehearsing and performing concerts. The first concert, including the Southern Arizona Flute Orchestra as well as a small chamber ensemble, will be presented on Sunday, May 8, at 3 p.m. in the Sanctuary at First United Methodist Church. The concert, titled “A Spring Celebration,” will feature two pieces composed for Tucson Flute Club’s 50th Anniversary in 2020: Southwestern Sketches by Ricky Lombardo and A Cirrus Sunset by local Tucson composer Bob Atwell. It will be the in-person world premiere of A Cirrus Sunset. The group performs under the baton of Lorena Suárez, a DMA student in orchestral conducting at the University of Arizona. The public is warmly invited. Mask wearing is encouraged (for the church’s most current protocols see firstchurchtucson.org). Admission is free, with donations appreciated.

The instrumentation for the concert will include multiple sizes of flutes — piccolo, C flute, alto flute, bass flute, and contrabass flute — encompassing six octaves and producing a surprising, richly textured sound.

First United Methodist Church is located at 915 East 4th Street, between Euclid and Park. There is ample parking under the solar parking structures as well as open parking lots. The Tyndall parking garage is also nearby.

Tucson Flute Club was founded in 1970 by the late Philip Swanson, then professor of flute at UA. The membership includes both amateur and professional flutists, as well as those interested in the flute, including five of the original founding members. The objectives of this 501(c)3 organization are to enable flutists to meet for ensemble playing for their own enjoyment; to broaden the knowledge of flute literature by providing performing opportunities for members and guest artists; and to increase knowledge of the flute through lectures, discussions, and related activities. Tucson Flute Club is supported in part by a grant from The Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona. For more information see tucsonfluteclub.org.
