Join the Arizona History Museum for a reception and program with artist Laurie McKenna. Hear McKenna talk about The Undesirables, an installation that explores the story of the Bisbee Deportation of 1917. On July 12th, 1917 in Bisbee, AZ mining companies and the Sheriff armed approximately 2000 citizens and rounded up 1,196 striking miners and their supporters. McKenna created 1,200 individual rubbings of a 1917 penny that commemorates each man, by name who were unlawfully taken and banished from their homes in Bisbee. McKenna will also share the stories of her process, motivations and how the arrival of a film crew shooting the Bisbee ’17 movie added another level to the project. Watch McKenna’s own video vignettes, where she used old metal toys and objects to play out imagined scenarios of the Bisbee deportation. Her spoken word includes some orphan stories, strange facts, and musings on what she discovered in her research of the Bisbee Deportation.
