The Bigamist

SUPPORT

Ida Lupino directs and stars in this sympathetic portrait of an ordinary man who finds himself in the arms of two women: an upper-crust businesswoman and a tough-talking waitress.
San Francisco businessman Harry Graham (Edmond O’Brien) is in the process of adopting a child with his wife and business partner, Eve (Joan Fontaine). When private investigator Jordan (Edmund Gwenn) uncovers the fact that Graham has another wife, Phyllis (Lupino), and a small child in Los Angeles, he confesses everything. In flashback, Graham tells of the strains in his marriage with Eve and how he found himself falling for the kind-hearted waitress Phyllis while on a business trip. The first Hollywood sound feature wherein its female star directed herself, The Bigamist also marks another in Ida Lupino’s string of biting dramas squarely confronting taboo social issues – an examination of marriage and adultery told with mounting noir-like tension and a surprisingly non-judgmental tone. (Dir. by Ida Lupino, 1953, USA, 80 mins., Not Rated)
