To rave reviews Quicksilver brings together today’s top North American performers: Robert Mealy and Julie Andrijeski (baroque violins), David Morris (viola da gamba), Avi Stein (harpsichord and organ), and Charles Weaver (theorbo and baroque guitar).
In this concert, Quicksilver presents chamber music written in a time of intense upheaval and unpredictable cultural climate in the German states. Inspired by the experimental works of Italian composers, the virtuosi working in Germany in the 17th century explored the sonata as an abstract form of wordless conversation in music, giving composers free rein to do as their imagination willed, delighting and astonishing the listener. This “stylus Fantasticus,” according to mathematician Athanasius Kirchner, was “instituted to display genius.”
Quicksilver presents its exemplars in works by Weckmann, Buxtehude, Kerll, Vierdanck, Bertali, and Schmeltzer.
Quicksilver’s recording, Fantasticus: Extravagant and Virtuosic Music from 17th Century Germany was named one of The New Yorker’s Ten Notable Recordings of 2014 and was praised as “Fantasticus, indeed” (Gramophone).
