PRESS CONFERENCE: Tucson Elected Officials to Join Tucson Solar Power Leaders to Call for Increased Solar Adoption for a Renewable Energy Future and Reduced Energy Costs

On Friday, February 25, 2022, at 10 a.m. MST, Arizona State Representatives Daniel Hernandez (LD 2) and Morgan Abraham (LD 10) will join Tucson solar advocates for a press conference to call for federal action to combat climate change and highlight why significant solar investments are needed in Southern Arizona’s growing solar-energy industry. This event is sponsored by Solar United Neighbors Action.

This informative event is designed to build support for much-needed investments to address the climate crisis, increase the adoption of solar power in Tucson, and drive growth in Arizona’s renewable energy sector.

Despite plentiful year-round sunshine, Arizona’s huge potential to harness the solar market in Tucson is still largely out of reach for nonprofit organizations and low-income communities due to political and bureaucratic procedures, policies and roadblocks to secure better rates for solar and solar-storage adoption. It’s time for that to change.

The featured speakers will highlight the solar investments passed in the U.S. House of Representatives in late 2021. Those funds are critical to addressing the climate crisis and creating millions of good-paying jobs in clean energy while increasing access to solar power and the benefits of clean energy to the Southern Arizona communities that need them most. Prior to the pandemic, clean-energy jobs were growing faster than the economy as a whole. The new investments would also add nearly 83,000 jobs in Arizona over the next five years and deliver massive energy savings for Arizona families.

● State Representative Daniel Hernandez Jr., District 2
● State Representative Morgan Abraham, District 10
● Duane Ediger, Board Member, Sustainable Tucson
● Tamora Muir, Tucson Resident and soon-to-be Rooftop Solar Homeowner
● John Mitman, President, Arizona Solar Energy Industries Association
● Adrian Keller, Arizona Program Associate, Solar United Neighbors Action

The Historic Y is the premier center for the arts, education, human rights, and social and environmental justice in Tucson, Arizona. In 2017 The Historic Y installed a 65.21 kW SunPower PV Solar System consisting of 189 SunPower 345 watt photovoltaic modules on the building’s rooftops. In 2018, The Historic Y produced 118,002 kWh onsite accounting for approximately 45% of the electrical consumption of The Historic Y. Additional benefits for The Historic Y include achieving an annual CO₂ offset of 278,806 lbs. To put that into perspective, a mature tree can absorb approximately 45 lbs of carbon dioxide annually, which is the same as planting 6,196 trees each year.
