“Buy a bag … go home in a box!!” What could be scarier than an all-night “Horrorthon?” You’ll find out in this greasy, tasty, perfectly-popped slasher flick that celebrates the goofy joys of old-school creature features and ‘80s-style stalk-and-slay terror, starring ‘90s Scream Queen Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather)!
In Popcorn, a fun-loving group of film students stage an all-night horror marathon at an abandoned movie palace. In addition to the three classic ‘50s terror features Mosquito, The Attack of the Amazing Electrified Man and The Stench (in Odorama!), they decide to screen a bizarre short called The Possessor, whose creator, Lanyard Gates, killed his entire family and set the theater on fire after its first showing. Maggie (Jill Schoelen, star of such teen horror classics as The Stepfather and Cutting Class) has been having scary dreams that seem to be connected to The Possessor, and as the Horrorthon gets underway, the nightmare comes true for her and her friends as they are stalked and slain by a mysterious killer while the horror-hungry audience in the theater really gets their money’s worth! Has the insane filmmaker Lanyard Gates survived to continue The Possessor’s deadly legacy? A loving homage to cheesy ‘50s B-movies (the trio of flicks shown at the Horrorthon all feature accompanying William Castle-style gimmicks recreated by the film students), and an insanely fun horror/comedy in its own right (one that clearly influenced the better-known Scream a few years later), Popcorn also features Scream Queen Dee Wallace (The Howling), along with Ray Walston (Fast Times at Ridgemont High), Malcom Danare (Christine) and Kelly Jo Minter (A Nightmare on Elm Street 5). (Dir. by Mark Herrier, 1991, USA, 91 mins., Rated R)
