Kekszakallu

SUPPORT

Loosely based on Béla Bartók’s 1918 opera “Bluebeard’s Castle” and largely constructed out of improvised scenes featuring non-actors, this extraordinary film blends narrative and documentary styles as it follows the lives of several daughters of rich industrialists from Buenos Aires. These young women are embarking on life away from their parents’ watchful eye, and into an oscillation between a perplexing existence in a Uruguayan resort town and drab days in Buenos Aires.
On holiday in Punta de Este with their friends and lovers, through pleasures and boredom, Kékszakállú offers a highly original and powerful portrait of anguish, solitude and a sense of entrapment in this seemingly perfect paradise. Beautifully shot with a formalist rigor and edited toward the symbolic, director Gastón Solnicki’s exactingly stunning film is both experimental and invigorating – a cinematic experience that opens itself to a myriad of interpretations which render the film as mysterious as it is gorgeous. (Dir. by Gastón Solnicki, 2016, Argentina, in Spanish with English subtitles, 72 mins., Not Rated)
