Josh Ritter’s acclaimed 20-year career as a songwriter and musician reaches new heights with the release of his ninth full-length album, Gathering. Along with his loyal bandmates, the Royal City Band, Josh returned to the studio with more songs than he’d ever had before at one time. Re-energized after a recent collaboration with legendary musician Bob Weir (who also contributes vocals and guitar to a song on Gathering) and — at the same time — tired of living in the shadow of his earlier self, Josh felt charged with exploring the possibility of cutting himself loose from his own and others’ expectations. In his words, “I began with an exciting sense of dissatisfaction, and what emerged, as I began to find my voice, was a record full of storms. I still can’t tell what era these stories are from. They feel part roustabout, part psalm to me.”
A songwriter, a musician, a New York Times best-selling author, a painter, a consummate performer. Josh Ritter encompasses all of these descriptors and more. He is a true artist. One who is not afraid of growing, changing and constantly challenging earlier versions of himself. Here, two decades into his storied career, Josh Ritter is just getting started.
The band continued to record and put out two albums including their self-titled Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers (2013) and their most recent effort Loved Wild Lost (2015), launching them on an extended US tour and their debut European tour. The Chicago Tribune wrote “Nicki has filled a void in music with her brand of vintage-tinged rocking country soul – music that’s like an enchanting friend you’ve known for a short while, but feels like you’ve known forever.”
At the completion of their 2016 Loved Wild Lost tour, Nicki was asked to join the The Infamous Stringdusters in support of their album Ladies and Gentlemen. That project led to a collaboration with Ryan Adams at Telluride Bluegrass, Newport Folk and on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show. Nicki has also had the honor of singing as a featured vocalist with musicians including Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule, Karl Denson, Boz Scaggs, Anders Osborne, Bonnie Raitt, Phil Lesh, Jackie Green, and many others.
In early 2017, Nicki released the single “Remember Love Wins”. She recorded and released it, with an accompanying video, in a seven-day burst of creative energy. It received a nod from Rolling Stone saying: “‘Remember Love Wins’, like Pete Seeger singing ‘We Shall Overcome,’ hits not just on the struggle ahead, but our ability to eventually come out on the right side of history.” Also in 2017, Nicki was also the voice of “Sarah” on the tender duet “No Wrong Way Home” in the short-animated film Pearl, which was nominated for an Oscar.
The future holds new songs, a new album and new performances. With no set release date yet, you can look forward to catching an early glimpse of new material with Nicki and an acoustic guitar in venues across the country in early 2018.
