The Southern Arizona Blues Heritage Foundation & The Rialto Theatre presents
A Classic Women’s Blues Showcase
Janiva Magness with Diunna Greenleaf & Blue Mercy
The Southern Arizona Blues Heritage Foundation & The Rialto Theatre are coming together to present this spectacular show featuring two of the top Blues women in the country. SABHF & The Rialto Theatre have worked hard to bring great music to Tucson. This particular show will be a memorable experience for everyone.
Janiva Magness is a Grammy nominated singer with deep Blues roots and contemporary style. She’s been nominated for 25 Blues Music Awards over the years, winning seven of them and becoming only the second woman to receive the coveted B.B. King Entertainer of The Year award from the Blues Foundation. She’s released a dozen critically acclaimed albums that touch on a variety of styles within the Blues. These albums reveal the feelings of a woman whose turbulent youth and rocky upbringing brought her to an understanding that love conquers all. Janiva Magness is one of the most beloved figures in the Blues and Americana field reaching a new and more diverse audience with each CD release.
Diunna Greenleaf and her band Blue Mercy hail from Houston, Texas. Her influences are varied, but include Koko Taylor, Aretha Franklin, Rosetta Tharpe, Sam Cooke as well as her Gospel singing parents. Like other great Texas Blues singers she combines intricate patches of Jazz, Gospel and Soul to create what she calls “Diunna’s brand of Blues.” She’s a two-time winner of the Koko Taylor Award for Best Traditional Female in 2014 and 2017. She won the Best New Artist Award in 2008, all from the Blues Foundation. She’s performed with Hubert Sumlin, Bob Corritore, Keb Mo, James Cotton, Pinetop Perkins and a host of others.
Individually, these women would deliver a fantastic show. On the same bill, it’s a show of shows. Janiva Magness and her band, along with Diunna Greenleaf and Blue Mercy will perform at 191 Toole on Friday September 29. Showtime is 7:30 PM. Tickets are $25 with a $5 discount for members of SABHF, The Rialto Foundation and KXCI.
