Director’s Choice reading from the 1980s: Lucille Clifton

Director’s Choice is a series of virtual events presenting historic readings from the University of Arizona Poetry Center’s extensive audiovisual archive Voca, as selected by past and present leadership of the Center, including Gail Browne, Alison Hawthorne Deming, Tyler Meier, and Frances Sjoberg. As part of the lead up to our celebration of the Poetry Center’s 60th anniversary, join us online for these live, free listening parties featuring one reading from each decade of the Poetry Center’s sixty years of existence.

From the 1980s: Join us to hear Lucille Clifton’s October 12th, 1983 reading, a wonderfully warm and charismatic reading. Clifton reads across her recent work, from her collections Two-Headed Woman, Good News about the Earth, and debuts poems and pieces that will later be published in Generations: A Memoir and Next: New Poems. Themes of family, race, illness, and faith run throughout. She ends the reading with the poem “song,” exhorting the audience, “if you love this planet, one
