“A pre-hysterical comedy!” It’s the dawn of humanity, and one hairy man must emerge from the cave to lead our species to world domination. And it’s … Ringo Starr???
In the delightfully dumb and highly entertaining Stone Age comedy, Caveman, the former Beatle plays Atouk, a poor, lovesick social outcast. As the smallest and weakest caveman of his tribe, he is not quite equipped to win the heart of the beautiful Lana (the future Mrs. Ringo Starr, Barbara Bach) and is banished from the cave by Lana’s bushy-haired bruiser of a boyfriend, Tonda (John Matuszak, who later won our hearts as Sloth in The Goonies), who is also the tribal chief. Forced to wander the ancient wilderness, Atouk meets a gaggle of unlikely allies – including his new best friend Tar (Dennis Quaid), blonde cavewoman Tala (Shelly Long), and her blind father Gog (Jack Gilford) – who, after hearing his story, want to help him get back with his clan. And before Atouk knows it, he’s the chief of his own tribe of misfits! Leading his ragtag band of oddballs into battle, Atouk has one mission in mind: to knock Tonda off his throne and whisk Lana away to the cave of her dreams! Packed with juvenile humor, sex and drug jokes (was this movie actually aimed at kids?), fun stop-motion dinosaurs (including a drunken, googly-eyed T-Rex who steals every scene he’s in) and a dialogue-free screenplay that instead relies on an invented language of grunts and grimaces, Caveman is the perfect prehistoric ‘80s comedy! (Dir. by Carl Gottlieb, 1981, USA, 91 mins., Rated PG)
