Imagine a New Orleans street band playing Indian Bollywood tunes with a go-go beat—you can’t? Then read on, because your day is about to get better. Red Baraat is the only bhangra brass band in North America. Hailing from New York City and formed in 2008, the group uses its improvisational sound to blend the dhol, a double-sided, barrel-shaped North Indian drum, with brass funk. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound—a merging of hard-driving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk and hip-hop. It’s a crazy blast of fun!
“Red Baraat is the best party band I’ve seen in years. After the group’s joyously noisy set at the Tiny Desk, a wide array of people — from our youngest interns to some of our oldest journalists — told me how much they loved Red Baraat. Of all the concerts that have come to my desk, this seemed to be the little-known band that won over the most hearts.” – Bob Boilen, NPR Watch Red Baraat’s Tiny Desk Concert
