Melanie (front right) and Houda’s family (Houda is center between her parents and behind her sister Sara) at the Arizona Welcomes Refugees potluck where they first met.

In August of 2016, Melanie and Houda met at potluck for Arizona Welcomes Refugees. It was just a few weeks after Houda’s family arrived in America from their temporary home in Jordan. They had been living in Jordan for several years after fleeing the war in Aleppo, Syria.

Houssam (Houda’s father) and Melanie both speak French, so they were able to chat some. Emane (Houda’s mom) made do with big smiles and expressive gestures. And Houda… well you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out!

In this first episode of Mn Huna: Finding Refuge in Friendship, Melanie and Houda remember that first meeting, reflect on the life stories that brought them together in Tucson, and introduce their friendship that crosses generations, language, religion, countries, and life experiences.

Despite these considerable differences, Melanie and Houda have much in common: a love for writing and literature, a belief in the power of telling our stories, and a desire to make the world a better place for all people.

Houda: hmm.

Houda: I meet Melanie in dinner. I was happy but also surprised at of how good they treat us. Wanted to have a better English, to be able to talk.

Melanie: So when I was in High school, I volunteered in the ESL, the English as a Second Language classes, and I had friends from Afghanistan and Laos, Chile, and Mexico and all sorts of places and one of the things I really loved, and love, was having friends where there was a language barrier but, gradually, that barrier disappeared. We got to know each other gradually without language but then we had language and could talk.

Houda: When I was in Jordan, I graduate High School, but now I started in 9th grade. I interested in Journalism and Political Science.

Melanie: So knowing Houda was interested in Journalism and Political Science and had such good English coming along, when Cathy Rivers from KXCI got in touch with me and asked me to do a mini-program on refugees here in Tucson I thought that Houda would be a great host. So we’re starting to work together on the program. And over the next months, as Houda’s English gets better and better, she’ll take over.

Houda: In the next episodes, we will talk more about the refugee stories and how we feel in a new country.  My first story for you will be about my Mother.

Melanie: And Emane is a really lovely friend and, Syrian culture, I have come to learn, is an incredibly gracious culture and Syria is known for its food. Famous for its food.

Houda: (laughter) Eat Melanie (laughter)

Melanie: (laughter) Yes. Every time I visit, “Eat Melanie, eat.  Have some coffee, Melanie, have some coffee.” So I look forward to Houda introducing you to Emane and to a bit more about her story.
