In 2008, in the midst of the turmoil over immigration and drug smuggling on the border, Richard Collins joins a happy-go-lucky group of Mexican riders retracing the pathways of Father Eusebio Francisco Kino who explored this land three hundred years prior.  For the next four years, Collins weaves the history of Anglo involvement in the Pimería Alta through the legacy of Father Kino with contemporary accounts of borderland life, both exhilarating and tragic. What is Día de los Muertos? It is a significant and highly celebrated holiday in Mexico, Latin America, and the Southwestern United States. To many Mexicans, death is not a subject to be feared, ignored, or divorced from the living. One cannot celebrate life without also celebrating death. This plática (informal talk) traces the origins of this Mexican festival and describes the traditional elements associated with the holiday including food, folk crafts and altars.
