Pima Community College Performing Arts presents the popular musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, based on Sholem Aleichem stories by special permission of Arnold Perl. Book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. Produced on the New York stage by Harold Prince. Original New York stage production directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins. Brought to the stage by the creative team of Todd Poelstra, Mickey Nugent, Nancy Davis Booth and Dr. Mark Nelson. February 20-March 2 in the Proscenium Theatre.

This wonderful family musical, set in a small Jewish village in 1905 Russia, revolves around the hardworking, but poor dairyman Tevye, the father of five daughters. He’s a big-hearted patriarch wishing to preserve his traditions and maintain his family while outside influences encroach upon their lives. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1964 and ran for almost 10 years. The initial production won nine Tony Awards. Musical numbers include the memorable favorites Tradition, Matchmaker, Matchmaker, If I Were a Rich Man, Sabbath Prayer, Miracle of Miracles, Do You Love Me?, and Sunrise, Sunset.

It’s time to introduce a new generation to this timeless musical celebrating familial love, trust and tradition amidst struggles and changing times. Tevye and his family are filled with passion, devotion and complete optimism that everything will work out. “It’s as close to musical theatre perfection as it gets!” exclaims director Poelstra. “It has strong characters, a wonderful story, unforgettable music and exhilarating dancing. The musical leaves you feeling good and invigorated…” he continues, “The show is a gift to the student cast and crew, who in turn, give the gift to the audience. This show is so universal, you can’t help but reflect on your own life.”

Opening night, Thursday, February 20 features Pima’s Family Heritage Celebration. “This is an opportunity for our community to come together and share their unique family stories, celebrate their family heritage and learn about other cultures,” said Geneva Escobedo, chairperson of PCC’s Family Heritage Celebration Committee. PCC’s student, faculty and staff, along with the Tucson community are encouraged to submit images, stories and poetry to be turned into a multimedia presentation to be shared onsite and online. The opening night celebration begins at 6 p.m. in the Center for the Arts complex on West Campus. It features displays, the multimedia presentation, entertainment and refreshments. The Louis Carlos Bernal Gallery will be open to view the Magical Realism exhibit. The event is free. The musical starts at 7:30 (tickets are required).

The Pima Community College Center for the Arts is located on West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road, Tucson (just west of downtown). For ticket information contact the box office at 206-6986 or centerforthearts@pima.edu.
