GM Report September 2014

GENERAL MANAGER REPORT TO THE BOARD, SEPTEMBER 2014

Financial reports have been provided separately. It was not as strong a month as I was hoping to see us post, nor was it an entirely bad way to wrap up the fiscal year. Keep in mind that many of our numbers for September and for the fiscal year will adjust after the audit, field work for which will begin on either December 1st or December 8th working toward a final report in February 2015.

The fall membership drive ran September 4th through the 23rd and we reached our goal in the typical amount of time. As we continue to build audience and geography, we should be able to cut time off of the length of these membership campaigns. Our performance always indicates opportunities for improvement.

One aspect of the fall drive that worked very well was the Board challenge match on Kidd Squidd’s show, in which we turned the Board’s $840 in challenges in to more than $3,000 in support. Thank you to all for that and especially to Greg for coming in to pitch it with Cathy and Kidd Squidd.

We will be holding a 3-day membership drive, December 4th through the 6th, in which we could/should raise between $12,000 and $15,000. One of the facts that Michelle and I learned at the conference in Denver is that a lot of potential gifts are being left on the table and that many stations are moving to add back these smaller focused campaigns (indeed, we believe AZPM will be starting their December campaign on the 6th). Our effort will be part of our anniversary celebration and feature the announcement of the Top 913 Songs Ever as chosen by a listener vote.

I continue to work with the Finance Committee on the budget for FY15. The committee has thus far received two drafts of the budget (October 6th: now on our 4th version) and we are on track for approval at the October 16th board meeting. The draft shows revenue and expenses both growing in the 9-10% range; the capital campaign revenue and expenses are not in the operational budget for the station.

On Monday September 8th I spoke to about 40 members of the Women Impacting Tucson luncheon group. On Wednesday September 24th I had lunch with Jonas from the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance to discuss partnerships and sponsorships; they are headquartered in northwest Tucson and program events in a lot of our new geography.

I continue to work with Leah Rhey on establishing her underwriting clientele, she has already brought us a number of new clients (Nova Home Loans, Lovin’ Spoonfuls, Tohono Chul Park) and brought some old ones, like Habitation Realty, back in to the fold.

October is a less busy month for events than it used to be, but KXCI will still be out tabling at the 3-day Tucson Meet Yourself festival (October 10-12) and tabling and tape-delay broadcasting the SABHF Blues & Heritage Festival on October 19th. We also have the Amplify! mixer at Bill & Connie Poorten’s on October 23rd.
